5 Resume Worthy Skills I Learned Through Blogging
When I first started my blog, I did it with the intentions of sharing some of my favorite outfits, adventures and overall thoughts as a hobby. After a while, I started learning different skills to help out my blog and get it where I wanted it to be. One thing I’ve noticed throughout the blogging process is that you really do learn a lot. If you don’t like the basic templates and layouts provided, or the colors of something or just anything about your blog, you can teach yourself how to change things. Once you have it established and looking the way you want, you can look through the analytics and see what other people like best about it too. I’ve really learned a lot through blogging and each one of these skills is now on my resume, and I must say, my blog has definitely helped me land interviews for jobs I technically wouldn’t be qualified for otherwise!
HTML is not a must when it comes to blogging, but it can really help you make your blog the way you want it. I say it’s not a must because you can always pay others to do the HTML for you. However, if you’re cheap like me, you’d rather learn yourself than pay someone to do it for you every time. I learned basic HTML back when Myspace was popular. I loved changing the colors of my backgrounds and changing the size of images etc. I was never taught any HTML, I taught myself. One really great way to teach yourself a bit of basic HTML is to Google it! There are a ton of tutorials offered online to help with basic HTML, all you need to do is type in what you want to know. Another route is to go through Youtube. I use Youtube for a lot of help when it comes to teaching myself certain skills. Also, check your community. Many communities offer classes on HTML to get you started.
- Graphic Design
I know what you’re thinking, graphic design sounds tough! Well in reality, it doesn’t have to be. With so much technology available to us, graphic design can be pretty simple. I know a lot of bloggers create their own photos through different programs like Photoshop, Illustrator and even iPhone Apps! I personally use iPhone apps a lot for my own photos like my Blogging 101 header photos. Photoshop can be tough when you get into the harder tools, but when you’re just starting out, you can learn a lot just by playing around with the different features. There are a lot of Photoshop tutorials available online and through Youtube videos which have really helped me out. You can create different photos out of blank pages, add text and different tools to make your photos really look cool. When you’re really interested in the graphic design element of blogging, it gets easier to learn because you WANT to learn more.
- Photo Editing
When your photographer finishes taking photos for you, you may be responsible for editing them. If a family member of boyfriend takes your photos, he may just hand off the camera to you once he’s done, leaving you to edit the photos. Hey, that’s okay! It’s pretty common for bloggers to edit their own photos. I personally prefer editing my own photos because I know what looks good. I know what I want my photos and overall ‘look’ to be like so I take pride in editing my own photos. Hey, if I could clone myself to be my own photographer as well, you know I would! Because we know what we want out of our photo-shoots and it can be hard to convey that to other people. When you edit your own photos, you are using valuable skills that can benefit you greatly. By teaching yourself different photo editing programs and tools, like Photoshop and Illustrator to edit your OOTD photos, you are really helping yourself. Mess with the lighting, the shadows and the focus. The more you know, the more you have to put on a resume! Even if you’re self-taught and only know the basics, employers will be impressed.
When you create a website or blog, you are shown the analytics based on which plugins you use. I personally use Google Analytics, so I can see how many people visit my site, where they’re from, what gender they are and what age group they’re from. I can see which of my pages get the most traffic, what links readers have clicked and even how long they are on my site. Analytics are really important when it comes to business. If you haven’t taken any business classes, this is a great thing to learn because you’ll have some important business skills through analytics.
Advertising is a big part of business. When it comes to blogging, it’s a big part of creating and maintaining a following. The more you advertise, the more people you reach, ultimately ending in more followers. When blogging, you want a high readership or there would be no point to really blog aside from personal reasons or recreation. When you’re a blogger, advertising is very important, and if you don’t have experience advertising, you’re learning through trial and error. I never knew anything about advertising until I started blogging, and it’s something I picked up along the way. Bloggers use multiple social media platforms, websites and apps to get their blogs out to the public. Many bloggers even send out business cards. The more you learn about advertising, the more you can help businesses even if you’ve never taken an advertising class in your life!
If you’ve been thinking about creating a blog of your own, I would say do it! Not only can it act as a creative outlet for you, it can teach you a lot! Even creating a basic blog and not tending to it very often will really impress employers. Who knows, it may end up helping you land multiple job interviews just like me! Happy Blogging<3
